Preface

This philosophical and allegorical romance of Salāmān wa Absāl, one of the Sab'a or Haft Awrang, of Jāmī, has been prescribed for the M. A. examination in Persian of the Bombay University. But copies of it were not easily accessible in India. To supply this need Messrs. Sharafuddin and Sons of Bombay have issued this edition. By the publication of it they have brought it within easier reach not only of our post-graduate students but also of the general public interested in the study of Persian literature. For this service they deserve the thanks of all students of Persian.

The text of this edition has been prepared from two earlier editions, viz., one of Falconer (London, 1850 A.D.), and the other of Rashīd-e-Yāsemī (Tehran, 1306 Shamsi). Some of the Indian libraries contain a number of good manuscripts of this poem, but none of them could be utilized for want of time. For the same reason no introduction explaining the philosophical import of the poem could be attempted. The editor had, therefore, to content himself with merely mentioning the chief sources of information regarding the poet and the poem for the benefit of the advanced student.

The Poet and his Works: 1. Professor Browne's Lit. Hist. of Persia, vol. iv; 2. The Biographical Sketch in the introduction to Nassau Lees' edition of Jāmī's Nafahātu'l-Uns, Calcutta, 1859 A.D.; 3. Rashahāt by 'Alī son of Mullā Ḥusayn-e-Kāshefī, pp. 133-163, Nawalkishore Press, Lucknow, 1897 A.D.; 4. Persian Taẕkiras such as تذکره دولتشاهی، آتشکده، خزانه عامره، مجمع الفصحاء، ریاض العارفین.

The Poem: 1. Text, edited by Falconer, London, 1850 A.D.; 2. Text, edited by Rashīd-e-Yāsemī, Tehran, 1306 Shamsi; 3. Engl. transl., by Falconer, London, 1856 A.D.; 4. Engl. transl., by Ed.
